Phase 1: Virar–Alibaug Multi‑Modal Corridor

The Virar–Alibaug Multi‑Modal Corridor (VAMC) is one of Maharashtra’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, designed to enhance east-west connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The project is being developed in two phases by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

📍 Phase 1 Overview: Virar to Navghar

  • Route: Virar (Palghar district) to Navghar (near Bhiwandi)
  • Length: Approximately 79 km
  • Type: 8-lane expressway with service roads and utility corridors
  • Status: Land acquisition and construction in progress (as of 2025)

🌐 Key Features

  • Multi-modal design to support roadways, metro lines, dedicated bus lanes, and freight corridors
  • Direct connectivity between Virar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli and further south toward Navi Mumbai and Alibaug
  • Reduces traffic burden on existing roads like the Western Express Highway and Eastern Express Highway
  • Boosts regional development across Vasai–Virar, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan growth corridors

🚧 Phase 1 Benefits

  • Faster freight movement from JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) to northern Maharashtra and beyond
  • Encourages new townships and industrial growth zones
  • Improves travel times for commuters and enhances overall connectivity in MMR

📌 Future Integration

Phase 1 will seamlessly integrate with Phase 2, which continues the corridor from Navghar to Alibaug via Uran and Panvel, connecting with upcoming transport nodes like Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and coastal highways.
